BAAM & the community

We are focusing more than ever on making the Cocoon 🦋 made from recycled materials. This is a hybrid between a sleeping bag and a mattress. This project was born from a desire to offer last-resort assistance to people who have to sleep on the streets, either because of overcrowded shelters or even by choice. 💚

100% upcycled

From upcycled materials

The Cocoon 🦋 is made from three main materials: plastic, styrofoam, and fabric. All the materials used in its manufacture are at least second-life materials. In many cases, we prevent these materials from going directly to landfills. The Cocoon is therefore a product made from upcycled materials.

Upcycling

Upcycling, also known as recycling, is the process of transforming unwanted or waste materials into new products or materials of higher quality or perceived value.

Manufacturing

The Cocoon 🦋 was created with the idea of being as sturdy and comfortable on the ground as a sleeping pad and as warm as a sleeping bag. This is achieved through several tactics. The key to its success lies in the ability to store air within the Cocoon. It is this air that will ensure the warmth. This explains the large size of the sleeping bag, which is approximately 10 feet by 4 feet. And of course, everything is waterproofed and windproof by using plastic between the fabrics for all parts of the Cocoon.

Camps and shelters

The dismantlings

BAAM aims to position itself at key moments, such as during dismantling operations, by partnering with various non-profit organizations already present on the ground. These dismantling operations, although more frequent in Montreal, are occurring in several cities across Quebec. “That's the issue. Shelters are currently overflowing, and the increase in encampments we're seeing in public spaces is also a symptom of the fact that spaces are becoming increasingly difficult [to find].” A quote from Robert Beaudry, responsible for homelessness on the Montreal Executive Committee.

Thanks to

I would like to thank our partners, thanks to whom we receive our raw material, Styrofoam, free of charge, through Brothers Canada. As you can see from the prototypes, we also use old Sherbrooke hockey jerseys for the fabric. Thank you for your involvement with us.
